Design Review

This service includes assessing and troubleshooting a current or proposed user interface or application design. The review can be based on written specifications, screen shots, a prototype, or the actual working software. Many projects begin with this task to determine where to focus resources during redesign of the next release. The deliverable is a written report of findings and recommendations.

Training

Interface Concepts offers training on its conceptual design framework. A one-day seminar is available that introduces the framework and includes hands-on practice with an example project. For other user interface training needs, customized courses can be developed and delivered.

Conceptual Design Framework

Interface Concepts uses a simple framework to help our clients develop explicit conceptual designs and better user interfaces for their software applications. The framework includes the following steps:

Define the central concept of the application.

Understand the users, their goals, and their requirements.

Describe the constraints and objectives for the design.

Create a user's object model.

Create a user's task model.

Synthesize a user interface model.

Iteratively evaluate the design against the objectives.

A user interface design is then created to clearly and accurately communicate the conceptual design to the application's users.

Many projects benefit from this semi-structured design approach, which includes coaching teams through each step of the process and tailoring the framework to specific project needs. Deliverables include user descriptions, user interface requirements, measurable objectives, a conceptual model, and a user interface model.

Usability Testing

Interface Concepts does not generally conduct usability tests. While usability testing is a worthwhile tool for empirically measuring whether a design meets its usability objectives, it is not a substitute for good design practice. Interface Concepts focuses on design.

Recommendations regarding alternatives to usability testing and referrals to those who do offer usability testing services can be provided.
