About Interface Concepts

Interface Concepts was started in 1995 by Kathy Potosnak, Ph.D. She is a human factors engineer who specializes in software user interface design. Her career in human-computer interaction began in 1983 after completing her doctorate in engineering psychology at Johns Hopkins University.

Prior to starting Interface Concepts, Kathy was employed at Adobe, Aldus, Ashton-Tate, and Rolm Systems. She also spent a year in The Netherlands on a research fellowship at the Institute for Perception Research and four years as a consultant with The Koffler Group in California.

Kathy's application domain experience includes e-commerce, web applications, image editing, graphics, traditional desktop applications (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets), print publishing (e.g., page layout, trapping, imposition, color separations), presentations, utilities, interpersonal networking, expert systems, barcode readers, shipping, radio broadcasting, speech recognition, speech synthesis, voice mail, and display phone applications.

She has led company-wide projects on user interface consistency, product integration, and compound document architectures. Related experience includes teaching at the university level, training in organizational development, designing and facilitating group processes, and managing interdisciplinary teams.

Dr. Potosnak has published over 30 articles on human-computer interaction and has taught many seminars on user interface design for individual client companies and at international user interface events. In 1987 she was invited to write her own column for IEEE Software magazine and was its editor for four years. She currently serves on the editorial board of interactions magazine published by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

After moving to Seattle in 1990, Kathy helped establish the Puget Sound chapter of ACM SIGCHI and served as an officer for four years. She is an active member of the national ACM SIGCHI, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, the Usability Professionals Association, and the Washington Software Alliance.
